The Boys are Back in Town, and we’re ready to extend this winning streak beginning with the Colorado Rockies tonight. It’s also Poncho giveaway night, so it should be a packed house. Really looking forward to the great homestand that should help catapult the team in better postseason contention.
As we talk about postseason, let’s fast forward to “off-season.” Many people ask what I do once the baseball season is over, but the next season comes fast - as it’s less than 120 days between seasons and there is so much work to prepare for the new season. Before I end this blog to prepare to head to work and begin the homestand, I did take a pause on ’The Ultimatum’ to begin watching AppleTV’s 'Silo' - wow….I’m hooked! I have quite a bit to watch before 'Ted Lasso' begins again on Aug. 5!
Today’s weigh-in reminded me that weight-loss is a marathon, and not a sprint. It’s a journey of changing your habits into something more healthy, and in the 6-weeks that I’ve been on this journey, I’ve maintained my goal of averaging two pounds of weight loss per week. To date, I’ve lost a total of 14.6 lbs, losing another 2.8 lbs this week, and bringing me 26.2 lbs short of my goal weight!
I found it funny - last week at my chiropractor appointment; the doctor was telling me about some stretches and movements I should do when I run my next marathon…I was like “my marathon running days are over!” She said “you’ll do another one!” No explanation - just a statement and the subject changed.
I’ve ran countless marathons in the peak of my running days, with hopes of even qualifying for the Boston Marathon - a couple times almost reaching the requirement. Her statement brought back so many memories of me running marathons and half-marathons throughout the World. Each race has their own uniqueness and charm.

You know what wasn’t a charm, this heat and humidity hitting San Diego right now. My son told me that he’d rather have this than rain. However, the Seattle Reign came into Snapdragon Stadium for an afternoon match against the San Diego Wave yesterday, and totally controlled the match. The San Diego Wave is in it’s fifth season in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), and attracts a great showing of support from the community. Yesterday’s match saw the crowd huddling under any and all shaded areas, and as the match carried on to the later minutes, the crowd dispersed early - definitely unusual for a San Diego crowd.

I also left before the 90th minute, and figured I’d cool off and head to the nearby Costco to grab some food and items for the week. It wasn’t just my idea, but a hundred other Wave fans did the same - SD Wave attire everywhere!
Its fun to see how supportive this community is of it’s team - win or lose, San Diego truly has a faithful following. You know what else is awesome about this community - the Public Libraries! I ended up seeing a TikTok about the San Diego City Public Libraries and all the benefits that residents get from being free library members and I was shocked! I ended up jumping on the Library's website, and ended up spending a couple hours exploring all the free stuff that we can benefit from - access to museums, the zoo, educational course, video streaming and so much more. If you haven’t taken advantage of your local library - you probably should - especially when we’re all looking for free or cheap things to do to explore our city.
The morning started off early with a run in Ocean Beach, which was perfect to avoid today’s Heat Advisory. Yes - it’s hot here in San Diego - reaching a high of 84! You folks out in Death Valley, Arizona, and Texas…don’t come at me!
The run was great, mostly through the neighborhoods, as I discovered there is no path along the beach. It was nice to see OB with only a few beachgoers and Newport Avenue clear. Grabbed some tea and a breakfast burrito following the run at Benedict’s at Ocean Villa Inn. Not sure how many variations of a breakfast burrito you can possibly have, but this one was absolutely amazing!

Talking about AMAZING - San Diego Football Club (SDFC) won an amazing match last night at Snapdragon Stadium, 1-0 against Dallas FC. The energy was extremely high and the team came out strong. My favorites, David Vasquez and Luca Bombino, were strong and fast - nice to see the team coming together after a long World Cup break.
To cap off the night, I finished watching Shrinking and let me say, what a great series on AppleTV. The Season Finale almost made me cry!! Now to finish The Ultimatum before Ted Lasso comes out on Aug. 5!
Between trying to stay cool, might hit up the San Diego Wave match this afternoon, while continuing to finally set-up my outdoor patio that I’ve been wanting to do since I moved here. Got the Surfboard hanging, and now time to get the mess cleaned up and table & chairs in place.

The ability to sleep in and take it slow today is an absolutely great feeling. Yes, it’s Saturday and I should be living my best life, but it’s going to be nice to sit back, relax, catch up on some chores around the house that have been neglected (until tonight's SDFC game) and get ready for another busy week.
The Padres return to San Diego after a 15 day absence from Petco Park, hoping to get some wins against the Colorado Rockies and San Francisco Giants. I’m looking forward to a couple awesome Theme Games this homestand to include African American Heritage Celebration on July 28; Don and Mud Mini Yacht Night on July 31 (sold out); Irish Heritage Celebration and Mason Miller Blanket on August 1; the Padres Pickleball Classic on August 1 & 2; and finally our second Hello Kitty Night on August 2 (sold out). In addition, we have two giveaways, the Poncho on July 28 and Home & Away Bucket Hat on July 30 for the first 40,000 fans in attendance. Hope to see you at the ballpark!
Before we hit the field, we have to finish San Diego Comic-Con. The warm weather didn’t stop the crowds from exploring the activations both in and outside the Convention Center. It was a blast to explore some of the activations before starting work, to include seeing a bit of the 'hulu animay' activation, walking through the Ignition Pavilion, and peaking at the Nickelodeon and AppleTV Silo set-ups. Grabbed some lunch at Lou & Mickey’s to do some people watching - probably the best thing about Comic-Con, then headed to work.

Work was supposed to be fairly mellow until local news networks and social media released that there would be a Green Day concert at Petco Park’s Gallagher Square. The crowds came in the thousands and we quickly pivoted to support the Nimrods Ice Cream Truck activation that was promoting the Nimrods Movie that hits theatres on August 14, featuring Green Day, and staring Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman, Ryan Foust, McKenna Grace, Jenna Fischer, and others.
We worked diligently with Green Day’s team to ensure a smooth and safe entry into the ballpark, as well as developing the plan. Once we got them all situated, it was ‘showtime!’ The band came out to Billie Joe Armstrong singing three of Green Day’s famous hits on top of the Ice Cream truck, then it was distributing the ice cream, band and movie merch, and quick meet & greets with the band and cast of Nimrods. Such a fun event and to be apart of this, was super cool! Guess where I’ll be on August 14? ….a AMC Theatre near me!

It’s been a very busy last three days - working a combined 42 hours.
Between speaking at The Department of Homeland Security’s San Diego Corporate Security Symposium; followed by a sold out Ed Sheeran Concert; beginning Wednesday with a Vets2Industry session regarding the Sports Industry; followed by meetings to prepare for next week’s Padres homestand; then Comic-Con prep; and the beginning of the re-sod of the field at Petco Park.

I was able to squeeze in a little personal time on Wednesday night too. I had the opportunity to listen to a conversation with Brad Bird and Michael Giacchino at UC San Diego. Michael is an Oscar, Grammy, and Golden Globe-winning composer for many of the movies that two-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker Brad Bird directed, such as The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, and Incredibles 2. The discussion along with the performance of some of the music was an absolutely perfect way to break up the busy week, especially after a full Tuesday!

Tuesday began with the DHS Corporate Security Symposium that brought private and public sector security professionals from San Diego County together to continue efforts to keep our properties, people and environment safe and secure. I had the privilege of being on a speaker panel that discussed how to protect large special events and gatherings. It was such an awesome discussion and where I focused on the local efforts and how we work as a “Faithful Community” to keep it safe and secure.
I quickly left after my discussion to head back to Petco Park for our Ed Sheeran concert and let me say - such a phenomenal event. I didn't have the opportunity to hear too much of Ed’s music, but was able to pop out and listen to one of his openers and great artist, Myles Smith. Another great night in San Diego.
Comic-Con 2026 is here in San Diego and if you don’t like crowds or traffic - stay away from Downtown and the Gaslamp District. I first experienced Comic-Con last year and had such a blast. I quickly discovered it was more than comic books, DC and Marvel - it about Fandom! Fandom of what? You name it - it’s here! Love American Horror Story - an activation is available. You love Maruchan Instant Lunch Noodles - there’s a place for you! Like Paramount+ Shows - got it! Heard about the movie Nimrods - might have a good pop-up opportunity today….the list goes on! You don't need a ticket to do the countless activations outside the ticketed San Diego Convention Center - so explore - have fun - drink plenty of water - and expect heavy crowds and line longs - but it’s worth it!!

“I may be crazy, don’t mind me. Say ‘Boy, let’s not talk too much…” maybe I’m a little too ready for tonight’s Ed Sheeran concert at Petco Park, but before I head to work to ensure that everyone attending the ‘Loop Tour’ is safe and security, I will be on a speaking panel at the San Diego Corporate Security Symposium hosted by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
I’m always willing to share my experiences and my lessons learned with others. I know that no two people or situations are the same and the things that I experienced in my life, and careers in the military and sports WILL be different, but always willing to share. I have been extremely gifted and I’m truly appreciative of my parents, children, family, friends, peers, leaders and those that I led, for the amazing life that I’ve lived and continue to live.

Last week, I was once again invited to share my sports industry experiences with special operations veterans that have transitioned out of the military and participated in The Honor Foundation program. Many people speak of the transition from military to civilian life, but many don’t realize the transformation that must take place once you’re back in the civilian life…some parts I still struggle with today.
Something that has helped me with my transformation is the connection that I have with Federal, State and Local Inter-agencies. During my time at the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), I worked closely with several of the agencies that I work with in my daily duties with the San Diego Padres.

I’ve traveled to many places throughout the World - even places I’ve never wanted to go. Each has their own uniqueness, pros, and cons.
People often ask me what city is my favorite, but that’s so difficult. Every person's experiences are different. Different weather, different crowds, different people you’re traveling with, and so on.
But, I'll say that Cardiff, Wales and San Diego, California are my favorites.

For the last six days, I've enjoyed a peaceful break from San Diego and Baseball. It's been awhile since I had a break to truly disconnect and just be at peace.
Those that know me, the beach is my peaceful spot. It truly became that way when I lived in Hawaii, and often times, those that know me best (to include my ex-wife), remind me of how much the beach means to me.
For the last 18 years, my cousins have spent a week in July at Bolsa Chica State Beach in Huntington Beach, California. I've participated either partially or fully for the last six years.
This year, due to work requirements (thank you Ed Sheeran), my week at Bolsa Chica didn't fully align with everyone else, and thought if it was even worth it to go - alone - for four days - just me.
I hope you all
had an amazing Thanksgiving and are over your food coma. I had a great time
spending it with a very small group of my Fort Bragg Rugby family where we ate
lots of amazing food and played some fun games to end the night.
It's hard to
imagine that this was my last Thanksgiving in the Army! As I look back at the
22-years of Thanksgiving meals, I am extremely thankful to the extended family
that has brought me into their homes, cooked amazing meals, and made lifelong
memories. I have so many fond military Thanksgiving memories, from spending
time with my Platoon Sergeant's family at Fort Lewis; to Hawaiian Thanksgivings
which included “Rusty-sized desserts;” to all the family time in Maryland; Fort
Bragg’s “Friendsgiving” meals; and all the Thanksgivings spent deployed. Thank
you to all of you that took care of me during the holidays over these two
decades!
During the
COVID-19 pandemic spring lock-down, I took on a little hobby of trying to learn
to cook. I'm still not the best, but I keep trying. This year for Thanksgiving,
I thought I would make some of my "specialties" and try a couple of
new things. Of course, I always bring my "famous" ham and turkey cookies
to Thanksgiving Dinner. For the last thirty-one years (missing only two or
three years) I've made my famous Turkey Cookies – this year receiving help from
William as I worked on making a green bean casserole, pumpkin pie, and
individual cinnamon roll apple pies. My creations didn’t come out too bad – I
was happy with it!

In addition to
cooking on Thanksgiving, I always watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
This year was much different, with a shortened parade route and no audience.
Regardless of the changes, it was still a great parade. It made me think of the
time I was selected and invited to be the first military service member to be
recognized and sit in front of the store during the 2012 parade.

GO ARMY –
BEAT NAVY!
Dating back to
1890, the Army-Navy game has been one of college's greatest rivalry games
between the United States Military Academy at West Point (Army) and the United
States Naval Academy at Annapolis (Navy).
I’m not exactly
sure when it began, but both teams traditionally wear uniforms honoring Army
and Navy units. The Army team has traditionally honored Infantry Divisions, and
this year they are honoring Hawaii’s 25th Infantry Division which I
was a member of for over eight years. I had spent just over three years in the
25th ID’s 3rd Brigade Combat Team, then moving to the 2nd
Stryker Brigade Combat Team for the remaining time on the island.
Not ONLY will
Army be honoring the 25th ID, but they are specifically honoring the
27th Infantry Regiment “WOLFHOUNDS” with our unit’s motto “Nec
Aspera Terrant” on one shoulder, the Wolfhound Crest on the other, and
"WOLFHOUNDS" printed along with their pants.
This news is so
exciting as I joined the Wolfhound O’hana in 2005 and truly has been such an
amazing experience. ONCE A WOLFHOUND, ALWAYS A WOLFHOUND!
RETIREMENT
TRANSITION
This week will
begin the countdown until retirement: 6-months until I begin Transition leave!
It is very exciting but anxious at the same time. I have a lot to do in these
last six months, including finding a new job.
I am looking to
move back to the West Coast to be closer to my kids and family – if anyone has
any leads or knows of a company that I would fit good with and be able to
contribute to, let me know!

PANCREATIC CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
In 2020,
pancreatic cancer will affect an estimated 57,600 Americans, 71 percent of whom
will die within one year of their diagnosis, and 90 percent of whom will die
within five years of diagnosis.
Pancreatic
cancer has surpassed breast cancer to become the third leading cause of
cancer-related death in the United States, and it is soon projected to become
the second leading cause.
It is the only
major cancer with the lowest five-year relative survival rate, at just ten percent.
We need your
help to shine a spotlight on this disease and finally make progress in
developing treatments and early detection tools.

On November 6,
I had the utmost privilege and honor to officiate the promotion ceremony from
Staff Sergeant (E-6) to Sergeant First Class (E-7) for one of my closest friends,
Myeshia Boston.
There are about
1.2 million active-duty Soldiers servings in the Army today! Just over 55,000
are senior NCOs (E7-E9) with a very small fraction – just over 6,000 females.
On November 6,
we promoted Myeshia into the Senior NCO ranks and I couldn't be prouder of her
accomplishments, determination, commitment, and most all friendship – the Army
got this promotion right!

RETIREMENT
TRANSITION
Last weekend I
was able to participate in my third Vets2Industry event, which is a five-hour
virtual networking event designed to connect transitioning or transitioned
Veterans with each other and recruiters from an array of industries. It is such
an amazing event where I’ve been able to meet other transitioning Veterans,
either separating from the military or retiring. It’s been great to have them
by my side during this retirement process.
The event
begins with a guest speaker, but this time began with a live virtual
performance from Navy Veteran, now professional singer, Emay Holmes who sings
the popular "Deployment Song."
Following
Emay’s performance, the former Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chairman of the
Joint Chiefs of Staff, John W. Troxell spoke and share a tremendous amount of
knowledge. It was great hearing the formerly top enlisted member in the entire
United States Armed Forces talk about transition and retirement!
I have been
blessed to have had such an amazing military occupational specialty (MOS),
which opened a tremendous number of doors, including deployments, specialized
training, unique positions, and a wealth of knowledge.
The MOS is a
military member’s specific job or career field. My MOS began as a 54B, Chemical
Operations Specialist, and later renumbered to 74D, Chemical Operations
Specialist.
As a Chemical,
Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Specialist, you’ll protect the country
against the threat of CBRN weapons of mass destruction, and you’ll
decontaminate hazardous material spills or accidents. You’ll employ the most
advanced equipment and coordinate defense systems against these weapons of mass
destruction in support of joint and combined arms operations.
In 2011, before
my deployment to Afghanistan, I was able to conduct specialized training with
my team on chemical processes and reactions. It was such an amazing experience
